Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) is a group of dozens of independent and locally operated health insurance companies that provide coverage to millions. BCBS offers different plans, such as:

HMO Plans: These require that members choose their primary care physician, who manages their care overall and refers them to specialists who are part of the BCBS network. These plans usually have lower premiums and out-of-pocket costs, but flexibility in choosing healthcare providers is limited.
PPO Plans: There’s more flexibility to choose your provider with a PPO plan from Blue Cross Blue Shield, and referrals aren’t required for specialists. You may be able to see in- and out-of-network providers, but the costs are lower if you stay in-network. You generally pay higher premiums and out-of-pocket costs than an HMO plan.

POS Plans: A POS plan offers a blend of features from HMOs and PPOs. You choose a primary care physician and get referrals for specialists, but you might have more flexibility to see out-of-network providers, although at higher costs. There are some cost-saving benefits of a POS plan and more flexibility than an HMO plan.

Types of Addiction Treatment Programs Covered by BCBS

United Healthcare will offer coverage for various addiction treatment programs that can meet your needs at different parts of your recovery journey.

Examples of the types of programs that may be covered include:

Detoxification: Also known as detox or withdrawal management, this is the first part of an addiction treatment plan involving supervised management of withdrawal symptoms. You receive medical supervision, medications for managing withdrawal symptoms and supportive care.
Medication-assisted treatment: MAT integrates FDA-approved medications with behavioral therapies and counseling to treat substance use disorders. This approach is often used for opioid and alcohol addictions. Medicines can minimize cravings and withdrawal symptoms, so it’s easier to focus on treatment and recovery.
Inpatient treatment: Inpatient or residential programs provide a structured environment with 24/7 care and intensive therapies. You live at the treatment center for a period of time and receive support for all of your needs. Blue Cross Blue Shield could cover some or all of the costs of room and board, medical and psychiatric care, therapy in group and individual settings, and educational and life skills workshops.
Partial hospitalization: A PHP integrates a high level of care similar to inpatient treatment with the ability to return home or to a sober living house at the end of the treatment day. Insurance coverage might include structured daily sessions, individual and group therapy and medical monitoring.
Intensive outpatient program: IOPs are less intensive than a PHP, including multiple therapy sessions each week, skill-building sessions and relapse prevention education.
Outpatient rehab: A flexible treatment option, you can attend therapy sessions and live at home while maintaining regular responsibilities. Coverage can include counseling, weekly therapy sessions, and ongoing support and monitoring.
